Woman suffers stroke after hickey

Just in case anyone was interested, here was the lay article that Dr. Cohen showed the class when I was taking Cardio. I guess the moral of the story is don't get hickeys after the age of 40 =]

  1. This is pretty crazy! However, as most lay articles do, this one is definitely written to scare people. Even though the article clearly states that this has never been reported before, the overall message I get is, "Don't get a hickey or you'll get a stroke". That being said I'm not saying we all need to go out and try to get a "love bite", but I think more investigations should have been done and reported as far as the condition of the woman. For example:

Was she more susceptible to forming blood clots than most people? Was she taking some other medications that could have caused it? Has she had a hickey before? If so, was there any sign of abnormal clotting before?

Maybe this information wasn't known, but the article could have at least addressed the fact that something else besides the hickey was probably a contributing factor since most people don't have strokes after getting a hickey!

  2. Wow! This title definitely caught my attention. After reading the article though I would argue that hickeys can save lives! Here's my logic: This woman, clearly enjoying an active love life, may not have realized that she was at risk for clotting and stroke. I would argue that if a simple hickey caused a stroke, some other slight trauma would have had a similar outcome. So maybe now this woman is actually going to see her cardiologist...

So now I say we should help our loved ones see if they are predisposed for CV issues... Go give your lived one a big old hickey! It's for their health!

    1. That was supposed to be "Go give your loved one"... Freaking auto-correct...
